My dear readers,
Good morning! I hope you are well. I write to you from just outside the bakery, sitting on the bench my brother made, America’s Mountain™ on the horizon, backlit now by the waning sunlight (I wrote this last night). Passerby pass by on old silver mountain bicycles, necks craned in hopes of seeing something going on in the bakery; goat patch is playing 80s rock ‘n roll and couples saunter in and out its doors; this sunset is hanging on, and a long swath of easy clouds prove it—yellowing, goldening, reddening, even purpling. Sure the inevitable wash of noise from the neverending highway and the occasional ambulance siren or blustering harley—not to mention the encroaching technological parade of the nearly-christened tesla superchargers to my left—keeps the night, perhaps, from attaining to the Sublime. But here I am and it’s pretty good and I’ll be damned if I can’t find some real thanksgiving for a nice night like this in the middle of summer in colorado, even old Colorado Springs!
I’m making up for my last email, if you can’t tell. It was too short.
Allow me to make some important announcements as we enter the third quarter of 2025 a.d.
Important Announcements
Barring catastrophe, we should continue to enjoy the beautiful music of Heather’s Multi-Competent String Quartet and Sarah’s Enchanting Baroque Woodwind Trio well through the summer. (I made those names up, mostly.) They grace the outside of the bakery each Saturday between 9-11am and man am I proud to have them here. I could say more about the presence—nay, necessity!—of beautiful instrumental music in public spaces, but I will restrain myself. For now. Just know that they’ll be here and you’re welcome to sit and listen at no cost. You may, however, support their excellent work by tossing something into their basket, or using the venmo link they usually have out. They’re worth it.
Meredith also plans to be here with her flowers for most Saturdays this summer. I feel so strongly about buying flowers, however, that I am committing to sending an addendum to this email later this week with a summary of my arguments to that effect. I’ve been saving up for this one! It’s gonna be good.
Mild changes to the bread schedule for this quarter, though we may trim/add some things in the next few weeks after a few trials this week and next. (Yes we’re working on a toaster loaf!) Special bread schedule:
Wednesday : olive
Thursday : jalapeno-cheddar
Friday : cherry hazelnut
Saturday : (still) baker’s choice!
ACTUALLY IMPORTANT: there will be NO HOAGIES this week. I’m sorry. For a number of reasons I am having to rework our sandwich strategy and lineup and I will be at it all this week with one of my longtime bakers and accomplices. Once the details are worked out I will send an update.
Finally, I say this a lot but…
Thank you. Thank you for supporting us these eight years, for bringing our loaves into your homes, for eating our croissants, for giving a baguette to your neighbors, for waiting in the line, for buying our key lime pies, for giving us a block of butter you brought back from France, for reading my short and long emails, for buying 36 fruit and fennel rolls every Saturday (you know who you are), for bringing an extra suitcase when you visited your family here and cramming it with bread to take home, for the poem you wrote us. I can’t brag about a lot but I’ll brag about my customers. So thanks.
See you around.
yours truly,
david
